Over the last 200 years it has imbibed many changes. The musical theaters Broadway and Hollywood have played a vital role in popularizing pop music. After 1930s the recording companies have controlled the releases of pop music. Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Peggy Lee, Bill Haley and his Comets, Fats Domino and Elvis Presley are some of the pop artists who became popular during the early 1950s.Pop music generally have a combination of rhythm and melody. Themes range from personal songs to vivacious party jams. Rock Also known as Rock nRoll or Rock and Roll, Rock is a form of music which generally features vocals, electric guitars, a bass guitar and a strong back beat and other instruments such as keyboards and brass. The music that emerged in 1950s in United states was influenced by the British groups after 1964.
Since its invasion in 1950s till date it has adopted many forms such as arena rock, surf music, British rock, garage rock , disco , punk rock and many others. Jimmy Eat World, Hawthorne Heights, Dashboard Confessional and Taking Back Sunday are some of the well known bands since 2001. Jazz Characterized by blue notes, syncopation, swing, call and response, polyrythms and improvisation Jazz originated in the 20th century in New Orleans. Initially jazz started as a combination of Western and African music traditions. It combined elements of Ragtime, marching band music and Blues. In a Jazz, the song which may be a popular ditty or blues is often just a starting point or frame of reference for the musicians to improvise around and by the end it would have been composed as a new piece having least resemblance with the original song. Hip Hop Also referred as rap or rap music, hip hop comprises of four elements rapping (MCing) and DJing (audio mixing and scratching), breakdancing and graffiti (tagging).Originated in United States it has spread in numerous countries today.
Gangsta rap a form of hip hop that gain popularity in the 1990s causing significant controversy over lyrics which seemed to be encouraging violence, promiscuity and drug use. ] Blues The evolution of the blues provides insight into the changes that took place in the lives of African Americans after slavery ended. A vocal and instrumental form of music has been a major influence on later American and Western popular music. Some of the well known great blues artists are Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy and Bessie Smith.
