Since the beginning of human awareness, music has been an essential part of our existence. This article will look at some of the many benefits that can be gained by participating in music, whether it is by actively playing electronic keyboards or some other instrument of your choosing. Even passive participation in music can have enormous benefits to the individual. Think of the families you know, or have experienced yourself, and consider whether the children you know, who have grown up in a music filled environment, are generally happy, fulfilled, and joyous? We used to scoff at parent’s singing or playing music to their unborn child while they are in the womb/uterus. However, it is now clear that there really is a benefit in that the these children are born with a highly developed intelligence. So we will see that both nature and nurture have a role to play in making music a central developmental theme in our lives. Throughout literature, we find it described everywhere, whether it be in the rhythms of nature, the babbling of a baby or of a brook and in the chatter of animals and birds . Just stop and listen – you will hear the sweetest tunes, creating a special magic reminding us how perfectly wonderful it is to be walking in this world. Music has a special place in that we have genetic material that influences our cellular structures in significant ways so that tunes and the rhythm of music is an essential component of our lives, whether we are conscious of it or not. This is partly because music learning develops areas of the brain responsible for language as well as reasoning. These are critical to our ability to comprehend information, to problem solve, to communicate effectively, and to build even more sophisticated learning processes. How good to be able to have such good developmental outcomes from doing an activity that is so enjoyable! Another benefit that has been demonstrated in research, is that children who have been given the opportunity to experience/learn music, are more likely to achieve significantly higher outcomes in the professions that generally generate societal respect and also have prospects of an excellent income. This is not to demean other less sought after occupations, just to highlight another advantage music can bring to the individual’s life. A well known Rockefeller study shows that those who have studied music have S.A.T scores of around 427. Amongst other things ,this may well be due to the fact that music is known to sharpen the functions of memory. Amongst other benefits, music develops the capacity for team work through co-operation with others, and gives a framework for great self-discipline. For many individuals, one of the most wonderful results is that they have found a capacity to express themselves in ways that exceed those of the use of words alone. Whether or not the person is a highly skilled musician, this outcome is a wonderful one which adds to a sense of joy, and well-being. Whether an individual is proficient player of an electronic keyboard, or other instrument, or just an active listener, music has an important benefit of reducing stress and any associated anger, and soothing us to the depth of our beings. We tend to enjoy completing activities like cooking and cleaning when there is music in the background, it does not feel nearly so tedious to be doing these repetitive, mind-dulling tasks! Our neighbors are not always that delighted though when we sing along very loudly to the music! In another post, I am going to to share more information about the therapeutic benefits of music reviewed , and some experiences I have observed with music therapy for the disabled and specifically for persons with dementia. If you have any benefits or advantages of music that you would like to share, please post your comment in the blog comment section.. I would love to hear from you.
